DETROIT – A Clinton Township teen accused of shooting and killing a mother appeared in court through a video call for an arraignment.
Anthony Deshawn Sneed, 15, is facing murder, armed robbery and firearm charges. He is being tried as an adult.
In court, a prosecutor revealed the alleged shooter’s repeated run-ins with the law.
“The people are going to ask for a remand in this situation,” said William Lawrence, Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. “The charge is first-degree felony murder, which carries life without parole for an adult.”
According to Lawrence, the defendant’s criminal history in Macomb County includes his conviction of carrying a firearm and using a stolen vehicle. He also was recently charged with a carjacking at gunpoint.
Based on the 15-year-old’s criminal history and the case, the court agreed with the prosecution he was a danger to the community and a shooting survivor.
Police say the teen shot Tasneen Sherrod and her 15-year-old son on Sept. 4.
Investigators say when they arrived at a home on Detroit’s east side, they found the pair outside with gunshot wounds.
In court, the defense argued the moments leading up to the deadly shooting may present another side to the story.
“It’s tragic someone lost their life, but I think, again, judge, this is early now, and I think more information will come out,” said Phil Ragan, a defense attorney.
Police confirmed Sherrod tried to de-escalate tensions between her son and Sneed.
Sneed allegedly robbed Sherrod’s son of a handgun during a fight.
The 15-year-old reportedly shot the mom and son multiple times before leaving the scene, according to police.
The mom later died from her injuries, while her son survived. The next day, Sneed turned himself in at a police precinct.
The teen’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 18.
