Detroit police Chief James White applies for new job amid city crisis

White confirmed his decision Wednesday to Local 4

DETROIT – Detroit police Chief James White has applied for a new job.

White confirmed Wednesday that he is seeking the CEO position at the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.

“I can confirm that I’ve applied for this position,” said White. “It’s an extremely important role at a critical time for Detroit and Wayne County. We continue to have a mental health crisis in our community that needs to be addressed at multiple levels.”

White, who was named chief in August 2021, has a background in mental health. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wayne State University and a Master of Science in Counseling from Central Michigan University.

During a community event on Wednesday (Sept. 11), White declined to answer questions about pursuing this new role.

“I look forward to a competitive process and want to respect the process by not saying anything further at this time,” White said. “As the process continues, I am fully committed to serving as Detroit’s police chief.”
