DETROIT – A 57-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in an attack on Detroit’s west side that left two women badly burned.
Detroit police chief James White said it’s one of the most awful cases he’s ever seen.

It happened at about 6 a.m., Monday, Sept. 9, as people were arriving at work at a business on West Grand Boulevard, near Hubbard Street. Roberto Romero is accused of spraying a flammable liquid on the victims, lighting them on fire and running off.

Police believe he had quit his job at the location a few weeks ago and was waiting in the parking lot before he attacked the two women, who were the first to arrive for work.
The two women were badly burned and rushed to a nearby hospital. They are expected to survive.
Romero was charged with assault with intent to murder, placing offensive substance causing physical injury, two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and two counts of felonious assault.
