Student reactions mixed after presidential debate at Oakland University watch party

Students used red and green flags to express their thoughts on candidates’ performance

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Students at Oakland University gathered on campus Tuesday for a presidential debate watch party.

“I can definitely say that students really care about this upcoming election,” said OU Student Body President Jimena Garcia. “They are all talking about it for sure.”

Students were given red and green flags to express their thoughts on the candidates’ performance throughout the debate.

“A lot of them don’t completely match my values that I have, but Trump does line up more with what I value, so I’m kind of excited for him,” said OU student Anthony Elias.

“I’m not really a political person, but I know what side I want to vote for, I’m a big fan of Kamala,” said OU student Asia Stewart.

After the debate, students gave their reactions.

“I think (Trump) made good points on the border,” Elias said. “I personally think he made decent points on abortion, but I think he should stay away from that topic because it seems he’s always like losing on that topic.”

“I think Harris is clearly the winner,” said OU student Jack Waters. “I think Trump has gone off the rails a little bit and that Harris has brought up a lot of really good points.”
