DETROIT – As the election cycle continues heating up, some Metro Detroiters want to make sure voters are proactive and prepared.
“People need to understand how to vote,” said Joyce Brooks with Bethune Community Coalition.
The group is hitting neighborhoods and passing out flyers for the Bethune Community Coalition’s special Voting program at Calvary United Methodist Church, Tuesday, Sept. 17.
“Our people have died for us to have the right to vote,” said Evangelist Frances Roland. “So, it’s important that they come out and vote. It’s very important.”
The goal is education. The group said it’s working with city and county elections staff, to make sure voters know the process. They want to educate the community on how to research candidates, and how to navigate the ballot among other things.
“We don’t tell people who to vote for, but we want people to understand to vote,” Brooks said.
They also want to educate community members on their options when it comes to casting a ballot.
Elaine Adams said, “I asked a lady, are you going to vote? I don’t know. I might have to do something. What’s more important than voting for your livelihood?”
The group said it is determined to make sure as many community members as possible are prepared and motivated to make their voices count.
The Bethune Community Council Voting Program will be held Tuesday, September 17, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 15050 Hubbell St, Detroit, MI.
