DETROIT – Michigan State Police are reminding drivers to allow distance between vehicles while driving after a semi collided with a car early Friday morning.

The crash happened when a car was traveling on the right lane of I-94 at Chene Street just before 5 a.m. on Sept. 13 with its hazard lights on due to a flat tire.

A semi, driven by a 31-year-old from Clinton Township, was also in the right lane. According to police, the driver of the semi could not stop in time and rear-ended the car. EMS treated the driver of the car at the scene.

Troopers who responded to the scene noticed the semi was leaking diesel fuel across all lanes of the freeway. The fuel also leaked into the storm drain. Detroit Fire Department and the Michigan Department of Transportation assessed the situation.

Police said diesel fuel was stopped from entering the storm drain, but additional hazardous material procedures were necessary.

The center and right lane of I-94 were closed for hours due to cleanup—the lanes have since reopened.

“Another preventable crash caused by a driver following too close. Make sure you allow enough distance between you and the car in front of you to stop safely,” said F/Lt Mike Shaw.
