Community celebrates new 81-unit affordable housing complex in Detroit

Neighbors gathered on Monday in Northwest Goldberg

DETROIT – The push to increase affordable housing units continues across the city of Detroit.

Neighbors gathered on Monday (Sept. 16) to celebrate the grand opening of a new 81-unit complex in the Northwest Goldberg community.

The complex is named Dreamtroit. Supporters said the affordable housing initiative allows some residents to build a unique sense of community.

Detroit’s version is an old auto factory turned multi-use complex and artist hub. Thanks to owners Matthew Naimi and Oren Goldenberg, it opened on Monday and became the latest affordable housing development in the city.

“We’re trying to address providing our community, the community that was already here, with options to continue to stay here and be creative,” said Naimi.

Around the eclectic complex, you’ll find many murals, portraits, or art installations at every turn.

“I think it’s the future,” said artist Walter Bailey. He’s among the dozens of tenants proudly calling Dreamtroit home.

The complex has 81 loft-style apartment units, with studio, one-and two-bedroom floor plans. About 58 of the units are considered affordable.

According to the city, 21% of the units are deeply affordable.

“When the city looks towards creating affordable housing, then that’s a good balance,” said Bailey. “Because the city needs balance. You need that affordable balance.”

In addition to housing, there are common areas for artists to draw inspiration. Several retail shops are already open, and there’s also a venue for live music.

Eli Jacobs said he’s promoting BrickFest 2024, the first concert at Dreamtroit on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Jacobs said, “That’s Brick Fest 2024. Headlining Baby Tron. In Lincoln Art Park. The Lincoln Factory. This place is beautiful man! It’s amazing.”

Supporters are calling Dreamtroit a game-changer. It’s merging arts, culture, and community through affordable housing.

”We wanted to make sure that the people who were spending time here prior to the development would be able to be here once we were open,” said Goldenberg.
