Friends, family gather in Eastern Market to honor victim in deadly tailgate shooting

Man was described as a fun person who loved to dance and wasn’t violent

DETROIT – Family and friends of Rayshawn Bryant gathered by the hundreds to honor and celebrate his life.

The shooting occurred on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, when Bryant was killed in a shooting at Eastern Market.

“We’re managing the best way we can,” said younger brother, David Bryant. “I mean, we lost a pillar in our family.”

David described his brother as a fun person who loved to dance and wasn’t violent.

Cell phone video of the incident, which has been circulating, shows two men yelling at one another. Rayshawn walks into view, attempting to break up the fight, when a gun is fired.

Rayshawn died at the scene. Police say the second man who was shot died Monday.

Friend Jelekeco Whitiker says he and Rayshawn bonded over tailgating.

He and everyone else who knew him danced in remembrance of him.

Rayshawn was known for his jit dancing skills, and mourners did the dance in his honor.

They want everyone to think before picking up a gun.

Detroit police arrested a man from Oak Park.

They confirm there was some sort of altercation before the shooting took place but are still trying to piece it all together.
