SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 15-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after reportedly bringing a handgun into a Southfield high school.
Police said they received a tip regarding a student with a handgun Monday, Sept. 16, at the Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology. The school immediately went into lockdown. According to authorities, school resource officers found the student inside a bathroom and after a brief struggle, officers removed a S&W 40-caliber handgun from the student’s waistband.
Police said the gun was loaded and had a round in the chamber.
Authorities released police body camera footage of the arrest in the school’s bathroom.
The 15-year-old has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing and possession of a weapon in a weapons-free school zone.
He was given no bond and was remanded to a juvenile facility.
Police said they do not believe the child had any plans of inflicting violence on others but was carrying the gun in self-defense. They said the gun was tracked to a home in Detroit where the teen visited recently to see friends.
