Assault in Redford Township leads to teen being shot

Police chief says teen was not the intended target

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 13-year-old was shot in Redford Township Tuesday evening after a fight between two adults.

The situation happened on Lexington near 8 Mile Road on Sept. 17 at around 7 p.m.

Redford Township Police Chief Jennifer Mansfield said there was an assault between two adults that led to a gun being drawn. During the assault, a shot was fired, and it struck a 13-year-old.

The suspect ran away from the scene but was later arrested by police. Two guns were recovered during the arrest.

Chief Mansfield said the teen was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be okay. She also said the suspect who was arrested was the teen’s stepfather.

According to the police chief, the teen was not the intended target of the shooting, and the assault was not a domestic incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
