According to “Checkiday,” adding cheese to burgers gained popularity in the late-1920s to mid-1930s.
The invention is thanks to Lionel Sternberger. According to “the spruce eats,” in 1924, Sternberger decided to slap a piece of American cheese onto a cooking hamburger at his father’s Pasadena, Cali. sandwich shop, the Rite Spot. They called it a “cheese hamburger.”
It was in 1934 when the first sandwich was called a “cheeseburger” at Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. The owner said he wanted to give the hamburger a little tang.
But you and me may be the ones who claim to have invented it.
Where do you start in celebrating, eat cheeseburgers!
The question is, would you celebrate by eating a cheeseburger that looked like this.
It was actually a real thing for cheese lovers nearly 8,500 miles away.
You may remember, Burger King in Thailand launched the real cheeseburger in June. According to its website, it was only good for 2 days.
Instead of meat, the “burger” had 20 slices of American cheese, placed cocktail napkin-style in a pile between two buns. And from the looks of the photo, it’s a no from me.

If you’re staying in and stacking your own burger. USA Today is giving us some insight on how to make the perfect one.
The publication says the key to stacking them in a way that protects dry ingredients from the wet ones and using condiments as glue.
You’ll always want to start with the bun.
- Toast the buns for a solid foundation.
- Spread mayonnaise, ketchup or your favorite condiment on the bun which will act as the glue.
- Add lettuce. This will protect the bun from juices from the tomato – which will come next.
- You’ll add the burger patty then the cheese. If you wish to add bacon, you’ll add it between the burger and cheese.
- After the blanket of cheese is on, next you’ll add pickles which the cheese will hold into place. Then comes any extra toppings you might want.
- We circle back around to another layer of glue for the top bun. Then place it on top of your creation.
Take a bite & enjoy!
