SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 15-year-old boy was arrested after reportedly bringing a loaded handgun into a Southfield high school.
The boy was taken into custody Monday, Sept. 16, after a reported struggle with the school’s resource officers.
Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology immediately went into lockdown after police received a tip regarding a student with a handgun. According to authorities, school resource officers found the student inside a bathroom and after a brief confrontation, officers removed a Smith and Wesson 40-caliber handgun from the student’s waistband.
“The gun was loaded. Fully Loaded. And there was a round in the chamber,” said Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren. “Carrying a gun on school property is unforgivable. I’m going to say it again: unforgivable.”
Police said they tracked the gun to a home in Detroit where the teen visited recently to see friends. The boy allegedly stole the unsecured firearm from the home.
Police said they do not believe the child had any plans of inflicting violence on others but was carrying the gun in self-defense as he reportedly was having issues with other teens on the way to and from school.
The owner of the gun may also face charges.
The 15-year-old has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing and possession of a weapon in a weapons-free school zone.
He was given no bond and was remanded to a juvenile facility.
