GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. – Friends, family and officers are saying a final goodbye to a Michigan State Police officer killed in the line of duty.
Flags will be lowered across the state to honor the life of Officer Daniel Kerstetter.
Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. on Sept. 20 for Kerstetter, who was on the job conducting a traffic stop of a semi on I-75 in Lincoln Park on Sept. 13—he was buckled in his vehicle. It is still unknown why, but the driver came up from behind, hit the wall and drove straight into the rear of the officer’s car.
That set off an incredible rescue attempt to get Kerstetter out of the car and rush him to the hospital. By Sunday, he could not overcome his injuries. The decision was made to remove him from life support, and the officer had arraigned to have his organs donated.
Michigan State Police continues to remind drivers about the state’s Move Over law—which requires all drivers, when first responders, tow operators or anyone on the side of the road, to slow down or move over and give plenty of space.
