All eligible veterans at Great Lakes National Cemetery are given a dignified service to honor their lives and the sacrifices they made for the country. In most cases, families of a veteran attend the services, and the next of kin is given the veteran’s ceremonial flag.
A member from each branch of service conducted the honors ceremony with the exception of the Coast Guard—A Great Lakes National Cemetery staff member who once served in the Coast Guard helped in that role.
The honors ceremony was accompanied by the presentation of flags, taps and a rifle salute to honor the 19 veterans.
The cemetery is open for visitation every day from dawn to dusk.
Anyone interested in helping the cemetery, Great Lakes National Cemetery will be hosting its biannual headstone cleaning on Saturday, Oct. 19. Volunteers must register before attending. More information on the event can be found on the cemetery’s Facebook page.
