Warren Mott High School cancels classes following ripple effect of Homecoming incident

What was supposed to be a fun weekend now has families concerned

WARREN, Mich. – Students at Warren Mott High School are staying home on Monday after what happened during their Homecoming dance over the weekend.

During the Homecoming dance on Saturday, Sept. 21, students started calling 911 when they heard balloons popping. The high volume of calls resulted in a significant police response. Police found no evidence of an active threat at the school, but the building was evacuated.

On Sunday, a Change.org petition started circulating asking for schools to be called off Monday in light of Saturday’s crisis response to the Homecoming dance. In response to the petition, someone posted a threat to the school. While police are investigating, Warren Mott schools are closed on Sept. 23—including cancelations of games, practices and evening events.

“To the students of Warren Mott - as your superintendent, your physical safety is a top priority for me. Your mental health is just as important. Please take some time on Monday to rest, reflect, to talk with your loved ones about how you’re feeling, and to be a friend to your peers. When you return to school on Tuesday, we will have adults you can talk with and resources to help you.”

Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent John C. Bernia Jr.
