ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Royal Oak library has reopened after it was temporarily closed because someone returned a DVD with bugs inside the case.

The Royal Oak Public Library shut down Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, after workers opened a DVD case in the drop box and found bugs.

“It appeared to be multiple species of bugs, but we aren’t sure,” the library posted on Facebook. “The DVD was returned sometime after we closed on Friday and before we opened on Saturday.”

Workers locked the book drops and put all the items in bags. Those bags were transferred to a garage.

Library director Sandy Irwin said pest experts were called in to visit on Monday, per the Associated Press.

The library reopened at 1 p.m. Monday after that inspection. Pest control experts said there was no threat after checking out the book drops and returned items.

Workers said the library has monthly pest inspections, so nobody should have worries about going back.

Our pest control company inspected all of the items that had been returned, the book drops, and the building. No insects were to be found. The photos we shared showed that it was a cockroach.

We are clear and will open at 1 p.m. today.

We receive monthly pest inspections of the building, so you should not have any worries about coming to the library.
