First grader rings bell after beating 4-year battle with leukemia in Metro Detroit

The momentous occasion couldn’t have happened on a better day

Six-year-old Kameron Nelson had a lot to celebrate.

After battling cancer for four years, the first grader was able to ring the bell Wednesday (Sept. 25) at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

The superhero fan, known by hospital staff as the Hulk, was all smiles as family and his care team lined the sidewalk.

“My babies going to ring that bell, and that’s going to be the most exciting part of everything,” said mom Bianca Nelson.

The momentous occasion couldn’t have happened on a better day, as Wednesday was Kameron’s late great-grandmother’s birthday.

Nelson says it was a nosebleed that first landed him in the hospital, which led to his cancer diagnosis at the age of two.

“Coming into this, it was so scary we didn’t know what was going to happen, but the great amazing doctors at Children’s assured us that we’re going to be fine,” said Nelson.

Dr. Jeffrey Taud, Chief Oncologist at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, treated Kameron.

“This is one of our really gratifying moments when we can really celebrate all the hard efforts,” Taud said.

At the bell ringing, Taud presented Kameron with a framed note signed by the members of his care team. Kameron’s future looks bright!
