Michigan man uses AI to alter image of child into explicit material, says sheriff

Suspect faces eight felony charges

Trevor Klinert (Genesee County Sheriff's Office)

GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. – A man was arrested for using artificial intelligence (AI) to alter an image of a child to create explicit material, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.

Trevor Klinert, 25, allegedly used an image of a child that was posted on social media and filtered the photo through AI websites to turn the image into explicit material.

The sheriff’s office initially had Klinert’s phone for a sextortion investigation—that’s when they saw the explicit material on the Clio man’s phone.

According to the sheriff’s office’s G.H.O.S.T. team, this is the first time they faced a case like this.

Klinert faces four charges of child sexually abusive material and four counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Klinert was also charged in 2017 for using a computer to commit a crime. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced in June 2017.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office reminds parents to be vigilant when posting photos of their children on social media, as they said the photos can fall into the wrong hands if they’re posted for the public to see.
