Police officer injured, suspect arrested after shooting in Detroit’s west side

Suspect was arrested

DETROIT – A Detroit police officer was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being shot in the hand.

Police initially responded to the 12000 block of Linwood just after 8 a.m. on Sept. 25 for a report of a man in his underwear jumping on different cars. Police said the man appeared to be in psychosis. By the time the police arrived, the man had left the scene.

At around 10 a.m., an officer saw the same man at a gas station after patrolling the area where the situation happened earlier. When the officer approached him, the man ran away.

The officer then chased after the man until they reached the porch of a house on the 2400 block of Highland. Police said the man was resisting arrest, and that’s when the man allegedly got a hold of the officer’s gun and shot the officer in the hand.

Police said the man tried to shoot the officer again, but the gun jammed. The man ran away from the officer with the gun, where he was later found a few blocks away and was arrested.

Police said the suspect was not injured.

The officer was sent to Henry Ford for his hand injury, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

The man was sent to the hospital, as well, for a mental health evaluation.
