Officials said Kirsch was located on the ground, suffering from a head injury.

Medics arrived on the scene and transported the 81-year-old man to a Metro Detroit Hospital for treatment, but Kirsch succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Sept. 17, 2024.

Allegedly, Gilchrist approached the 81-year-old tourist and, without provocation, hit him, causing him to fall and injure his head.

The 30-year-old man was previously charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and aggravated assault, but they were amended due to the death of Kirsch.

Gilchrist has now been charged with second-degree murder.

The Detroit native was charged and remanded to jail in the new charges Wednesday, Sept. 25, in 36th District Court.

The probable cause conference is scheduled for Oct. 3, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the preliminary examination is scheduled for Oct. 9, 2024, at 8:45 a.m.
