ALPENA, Mich. – The Michigan DNR is asking for the public to weigh in on the future development at the Rockport Recreation Area.
The Rockport Recreation Area is along the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena and Presque Isle counties. It’s a 4,237-acre park where people can search for fossils, go horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, stargazing, and exploring the lakeshore.
A draft development plan proposes adding a campground and overnight lodging facilities, along with expanded trail uses and other infrastructure. A public open house and meeting will be held in Alpena to take public input on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024.
“Public input is essential as we begin to make plans to modernize this unique park and enhance the visitor experience.” said Randy Brown, Rockport Recreation Area supervisor. “We’re eager to hear ideas on how to best serve the growing number of anglers, trail users and rock hounds, including potential overnight accommodations and expanded trail uses.”
Public input sessions
Two public input sessions will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at the Alpena Township Hall at 4385 U.S. 23 N in Alpena.
The open house will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. People can stop by to view the proposed development plan, share feedback, and ask questions.
The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The DNR will formally present an overview of the proposed development plan and people will be allowed to give input after.
Submit comments by mail, email
Anyone unable to attend the open house can send comments and feedback via email to DNR-PRD-GaylordDistrict@Michigan.gov through Nov. 8. Written comments can be mailed to Hoeft State Park, 5001 U.S. 23 N, Rogers City, MI 49779.
