What we know: Footage shows suspect shooting at police, nearby homes during standoff in Oakland County

Standoff happened at a Farmington Hills home on Sept. 15

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Bodycam footage was released Wednesday of the standoff at a Farmington Hills home where a man allegedly shot at police and hit multiple homes in the neighborhood.

Background

The situation unfolded when Farmington Hills police responded to a domestic violence assault at a home in the area of Middlebelt and 12 Mile roads on Sept. 15.

It’s alleged the suspect, 32-year-old Dejuan Patrick Evans, assaulted a woman and threatened her life in front of her children. The victim’s child called 911.

What the footage shows

Police footage shows the woman leaving the house as officers arrived. She then told police her children were still upstairs, and the man had a gun before officers entered the home. When police asked the woman to tell the man to come downstairs, the footage shows the front door being shut in front of the officers. She reportedly told police she was assaulted by the suspect.

As the officers went up the stairs, they faced the suspect, who could be seen holding a gun. In the footage, police asked the suspect to put his hands up, but then multiple gunshots can be heard from the suspect and the officers returning fire.

The officers took cover outside and requested numerous agencies and the SWAT team for backup. During this, Evans barricaded himself inside the home and was reportedly trying to break into the room the children barricaded themselves in.

The children were able to run out of the house as the suspect opened fire outside of the home.

Police said multiple homes in the surrounding area were struck by his gunfire. Dashboard cameras captured multiple cruisers struck by gunfire, as well.

A sniper from the SWAT team fired one shot in return fire and injured Evans—police released video of the suspect falling after being shot. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office said he is still at a hospital in custody and under guard.

Suspect charged with multiple felonies

Evans has been charged with 13 felonies. Here’s a breakdown of those charges:

  • Three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder
  • One count of Firearm Possession by a Prohibited Person
  • Two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
  • Six counts of Felony Firearm Second or Subsequent Offense
  • One count of Domestic Violence
