Howell Nature Center closes after 20-foot tree kills boy

Boy was flown to Motts Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor

HOWELL, Mich. – The Howell Nature Center will be closed on Friday after a 20-foot tall dead tree trunk fell on a 12-year-old boy, killing him.

According to officials, the area where the incident occurred on Sept. 26, 2024, was remote in the back of the park.

Howell Nature Center released a statement on their Facebook page expressing sorrow.

"Our hearts break and we are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred here at Howell Nature Center.Our thoughts and prayers are with the child, their family, fellow students, teachers, and staff during this difficult time.The park and clinic will be closed tomorrow September 27, 2024 so staff can come together and process today’s events."

The 12-year-old boy was transported on the ground to the Parker Middle School, where a survival flight helicopter flew him to Motts Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Early Friday morning, the Livingston County Sheriff confirmed the boy has died.
