Helene lashes the South with wind and flooding rains after coming ashore as a Category 4 storm
Authorities rescued people trapped by floodwaters and more than 3 million customers were in the dark across much of the southeastern U.S. as Hurricane Helene weakened to a tropical storm over Georgia early Friday after making landfall overnight in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 storm.
Helene came ashore amid warnings from the National Hurricane Center that the enormous system could create a “nightmare” storm surge. There were at least four storm-related deaths.
Video on social media sites showed sheets of rain coming down in Perry, Florida, near where Helene made landfall, and siding being torn off buildings. One local news station showed a home that had flipped over. The community and much of surrounding Taylor County were without power.

A ticket matched the rive white balls drawn March 26, 2024: 18-25-34-39-48 to win a $25,000 year-for-life prize. Six months later, the prize still hasn’t been claimed.
The winning ticket was purchased at Merriman Drugs, located at 31320 5 Mile Road in Livonia.
Howell Nature Center closes after 20-foot tree kills boy
The Howell Nature Center will be closed on Friday after a 20-foot tall dead tree trunk fell on a 12-year-old boy, killing him.
According to officials, the area where the incident occurred on Sept. 26, 2024, was remote in the back of the park.
Howell Nature Center released a statement on their Facebook page expressing sorrow.

After a dry end to the week, all eyes are on the tropics this morning as Hurricane Helene made landfall early on Friday morning as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. We will be keeping an eye on this system, as it will have an impact on our forecast, looking ahead into the upcoming weekend.
Some of the cloud cover from Helene has already started to work into the region early this morning, and that will keep them mostly cloudy sky into the forecast as we work through the end of the week. High temperatures cooler, only in the middle 70s by Friday afternoon.
