Vacation in Florida turns into hurricane experience for Metro Detroit families

Families were told to shelter in place

Metro Detroiters on vacation in Florida have found themselves in the path of Hurricane Helene.

“We were down here for a beautiful Florida vacation and a couple of days in we realized we were stuck here for a hurricane,” Veronica Cruz from West Bloomfield said.

Cruz is vacationing in Siesta Key with family.

They’re hunkering down in the condo as the hurricane brings strong winds and storm surges.

“We ended up having to fill our garbage cans with water because we just lost power (and) they turned the water off this morning,” Cruz said.

Joe Carr from South Lyon and his fiancée are also vacationing in Florida.

“When we evacuated, my fiancée suggested we get as far away from the coast as possible, so we came here to Sebring,” Carr said. “Never been through a hurricane before, so it’s been an experience for us both.”
