What’s that? Sterling Heights police wrangle alligator with assistance

Police are looking for its owner

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Sterling Heights residents got quite the surprise Thursday when they saw an alligator hiding under a car.

Sterling Heights police were called to a home on Summit Dr. around 8 a.m., Thursday Oct. 3 for a loose alligator. When they got there, sure enough there it was hiding under a car.

The police department says officers have no training on how to wrangle an alligator, so they decided to call in the professionals from the Reptarium Zoo in Utica to capture the four-foot guy.

The alligator was safely secured and transported to the Repartium Zoo to be cared for. Now the officers are on the hunt to find its owner.

Sterling Heights police want to remind the public that while owning an exotic animal “may seem to be cool,” it’s still very dangerous. In Sterling Heights, it’s a misdemeanor to own a dangerous animal such as an alligator, with potential fines up to $500.

If anyone has information on who the owner may be, call Sterling Heights Animal Control at 586-446-2879.
