Detroit Riverfront vigil marks year since October 7th attack

Detroit Riverfront vigil marks year since October 7th attack (WDIV)

DETROIT – The mood along the riverfront reflected solemness as many gathered to call for an end to what’s happening overseas as Monday will mark one year following the October 7th attack in Israel.

Jewish Voice for Peace is calling for divestment from Israel and an arms embargo.

Similar events are expected to be held throughout the U.S., according to Dana Kornberg, an organizer.

The demonstration to call for an end to war is partly inspired by the High Holiday ritual of Tashlich, an ancient symbolic ceremony which is described as casting away individual and collective sins.

It’s also a time of repair and recommitment, Kornberg said.

“To think about repair will look like because we think about this as a process of repair going into the new year – of repairing any harms that we’ve caused,” she said.

People tossed rocks into the Detroit River to commemorate the moment.

The demonstrators’ message is people should mourn the dead while fighting for the living.

The gathering follows a recent pro-Palestine demonstration in Downtown Detroit.

Meanwhile, ADL Michigan compiled a list of events also happening to reflect and commemorate October 7th and the impact it has had on Israel and the Jewish community.
