These 22 campsites across Michigan will see closures in 2025

For those looking to hit up one of Michigan’s many campgrounds, you may have to double-check if it’s open.

Multiple campsites across Michigan will see some closures for at least some of 2025 for renovations. Some are already closed, but are expected to reopen sometime in 2025.

The renovations are part of the 2022 Building Michigan Together Plan, which provided $250 million in federal funds to help tackle the infrastructure needs of Michigan’s state park system.

Algonac State Park’s day-use and campground closures

Algonac State Park is undergoing enhancements that include installing full-hookup sites and repaving roads. As a result, the park’s day-use area will be closed until mid-to-late October 2024. Additionally, the Riverfront Modern Campground will remain closed until March 22, 2025, and the Wagon Wheel Modern Campground until May 15, 2025.

Bewabic State Park modern campground (B- and C-loop) closures

For the 2025 season, Bewabic State Park’s B and C campground loops (sites #25-129) will be closed due to planned enhancements, including the construction of a new toilet and shower building and the repaving of park roads. The A loop will remain open for most of the season.

Brighton Recreation Area Bishop Lake modern campground, shelters and equestrian campground

The Bishop Lake modern campground at Brighton Recreation Area will be closed until May 2025 due to delayed improvement projects involving electrical updates and road repairs. Additionally, the Horseman’s equestrian campground will be closed for road repairs until Oct. 15, 2024.

Brimley State Park’s day-use area and modern campground closed through May/June 2025

Brimley State Park’s day-use area and campground will be closed to accommodate upgrades to water lines and the storm water system. The campground is scheduled to reopen on May 19, 2025, and the day-use area on June 15, 2025.

Clear Lake State Park modern campground and lodge closed through June 16, 2025

Clear Lake State Park’s modern campground and lodge will be closed for renovations from Oct. 15, 2024, to June 16, 2025. The upgrades will include improvements to the water distribution system, toilet and shower facilities, and sanitation station.

Fayette State Park’s historic townsite closed for upgrades for 2024 season

Fayette State Park’s historic townsite will undergo structural upgrades to its furnace complex, leading to its closure for the 2024 season. This measure is taken to ensure visitor safety during the construction period.

Fort Custer Recreation Area temporary closures to toilet and shower buildings

Fort Custer Recreation Area has reopened two new toilet and shower buildings along with electrical upgrades in the west loop of the modern campground. Temporary closures are scheduled for the toilet and shower building in the east loop from November 4-15 and in the west loop from November 18-29 to complete final touches.

Hartwick Pines State Park modern campground to close through end of 2024 camping season

Hartwick Pines State Park’s modern campground will be closed through the end of the 2024 camping season to facilitate planned electrical upgrades. The closure will not affect overnight lodging, shelters, or the group-use campground.

Hoeft State Park campground closed Oct. 15, 2024-June 16, 2025

Hoeft State Park campground will be closed from Oct. 15, 2024, to June 16, 2025, due to planned renovations. The upgrades will focus on the park’s water distribution, toilet and shower buildings, sanitation station, sewage system, and contact station.

Interlochen State Park’s modern campground and day-use area east of J. Maddy Parkway closures

Interlochen State Park is temporarily closing its modern campground and day-use area east of J. Maddy Parkway to enhance the water and sewer system and upgrade the beach house toilet facilities. The day-use area is expected to reopen in mid-November, while the modern campgrounds will reopen by May 15, 2025.

Ludington State Park to close majority of park through July 1, 2025 for park enhancements

Ludington State Park is undergoing enhancements, leading to the closure of most of the park until July 1, 2025. Improvements include paving, parking expansion, and traffic flow enhancement. Despite the closure, 2,000 acres and a 3-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline remain open, with accessible hiking trails and a boardwalk south of the Big Sable River. Roadside parking is available along M-116 and at the Skyline Trail parking lot.

McLain State Park campground to close for remainder of 2024 season

McLain State Park campground will be closed for the remainder of the 2024 season to accommodate a planned enhancement project aimed at upgrading the wastewater treatment system. All existing camping and lodging reservations during this closure period will still be honored.

Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area’s modern campground and overnight lodging are closed until April 2025 due to ongoing improvements in electrical, water, and sewer systems.

Otsego Lake State Park construction postponed, closure set for early August 2025

The project to enhance Otsego Lake State Park by upgrading electrical and septic systems and converting 44 campsites to full-hookup has been postponed. The campground will open as scheduled on May 1, 2025, but will close in early August for construction. Day-use areas and boating access will remain available during this period.

Pinckney Recreation Area Bruin Lake modern campground to close for remainder of 2024 season

The Bruin Lake modern campground at Pinckney Recreation Area will remain closed for the 2024 season. The closure is to facilitate upgrades to the sanitation station, north toilet and shower building, and park roads.

Pontiac Lake Recreation Area’s modern campground and lodging facilities closed through April 2025

Pontiac Lake Recreation Area’s modern campground, including an A-frame tiny house and cottages, will be closed through April 2025 due to park enhancements aimed at updating the sanitation station entrance. The closure is part of ongoing improvements to the park’s facilities.

Port Crescent State Park campground closed for remainder of 2024 season

Port Crescent State Park’s modern campground will be closed for the 2024 season to facilitate upgrades to the roads, water and sewer lines, electrical systems, and sanitation station. These improvements aim to enhance the infrastructure and services provided at the campground.

Rifle River Recreation Area modern campground closed through spring 2025

The Rifle River Recreation Area has completed improvements, including paving the day-use road and parking lot and updating the pavilion, ahead of schedule, allowing the day-use area and pavilion to open. However, the Grousehaven modern campground will remain closed through spring 2025 for upgrades to the electric, water, and lift station, while rustic campgrounds and cabins continue to operate.

Sleepy Hollow State Park modern campground and shelters closed April 15 through Oct. 31, 2025

Sleepy Hollow State Park’s modern campground and shelters will be closed from April 15 to Oct. 31, 2025, due to an enhancement project. The project includes replacing the toilet and shower building, paving campground roads, and updating the beach building.

Tawas Point State Park modern campground closed through April 2025

Tawas Point State Park’s modern campground will undergo electrical upgrades, resulting in its closure until April 30, 2025. These enhancements are part of planned improvements to the park.

Waterloo Recreation Area’s Sugarloaf and Portage Lake campgrounds closures

The Waterloo Recreation Area will undergo temporary closures for upgrades to its playground, fishing pier, park roads, and water systems. The Portage Lake campground and associated facilities will be closed until January 1, while the Sugarloaf Lake campground will reopen Oct. 15. The 2024 harvest festival is canceled but will resume in 2025.

Yankee Springs Recreation Area’s day-use beach house and campground expected to reopen spring 2025

The Yankee Springs Recreation Area’s Gun Lake campground and beach house will be closed for the 2024 season to facilitate improvements in electrical, sewer, park roads, and the fishing pier. While most of the park remains accessible, access may be restricted due to construction, with plans to reopen in spring 2025, including some resized campsites.
