‘Simply an accident’: Southfield patrol car involved in 3-car crash

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Three cars, including a Southfield patrol car, were involved in a crash early Tuesday morning on 12 Mile.

The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. on Oct. 8 at the intersection of 12 Mile and Marimoor Drive.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said as the patrol car approached the intersection, a car driven by a 16-year-old girl turned left onto 12 Mile from Marimoor Drive and crashed into the officers. The crash caused the patrol car to crash into another car, driven by a 58-year-old Wixom woman, heading east on 12 Mile Road.

Southfield police showed dashcam footage of the crash during a press conference on Oct. 8.

Barren emphasized that the officers were not responding to any calls at the time of the crash and were traveling under 40 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. He said the crash was “simply an accident.”

The 16-year-old girl was treated at the scene for her injuries, the 58-year-old woman was sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the police were sent to a local hospital for their non-life-threatening injuries.
