Detroit police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the officers from the 5th Precinct were on routine patrol and entered his name into their system, which came back as a “Parole violation.”
Fitzgerald said the man pulled a weapon from his waistband and fired shots at the officers, where one officer returned fire and killed the man.
“The officer thought he was struck and was taken to a nearby hospital,” said Fitzgerald. “He was not. He has no injuries.”
Fitzgerald said the victim was a white man in his late 30s.
According to Fitzgerald, the man has a lengthy criminal history, which was too much to list.
“Officers knew him, and they did a great job as some of the kids in the area did not get injured in the shootout,” Fitzgerald said. “We did recover his weapon, and he was declared deceased by medics when they arrived here.”
Fitzgerald said officers were getting out of their vehicle when the man in his late 30s pulled his weapon and started firing.
The officer said he felt that he might have been shot due to a strike mark on the lower passenger side door, causing him to return fire.
When about how the concerned parents were during their kid’s football practice at the time of the shootout, Fitzgerald said, “I would tell them to keep coming out here with their kids, keep practicing as I’m sure it will be a long season for them. Police are out here for that reason to keep everyone safe. They are out doing routine patrol. They happened to notice this guy. They’ve known him from a previous encounter. They tried to do an encounter on him, and this is where we are at.”
