Police chase ends in crash in Hamtramck that killed 1, hospitalized 5

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A brief police chase in Hamtramck ended in a fatal crash Thursday.

It happened near the intersection of Conant and McNichols Road.

According to Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, it started when the assault of some police officers during a traffic stop, which led to the pursuit that ended when the chased vehicle blew a red light and hit multiple cars. Six vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police said five people have been hospitalized and one person was killed in the crash.

“It’s a very tragic incident," Altaheri said. “Very tragic. My condolences to the family of the person that was killed.

Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
