City addresses mental health stigma with ‘Protect Your Crown’ initiative in Metro Detroit

For many people, access to mental health resources remains a challenge

DETROIT – Bringing awareness to issues and realities around mental health is the focus for many people and organizations.

World Mental Health Day is October 10. Many advocates describe it as a time to discuss mental health education and advocacy against the social stigma.

Some believe mental health matters in different communities are still unspoken. They are often untreated.

For many people, access to mental health resources remains a challenge.

“It’s so critical for people to understand themselves and understand how to ground themselves,” said Detroit City Council President Pro Tem James Tate.

Earlier this year, Tate and the Mayor’s office and health department launched an initiative called ‘Protect Your Crown.’ It’s a campaign promoting the importance of maintaining one’s overall mental health without shame or fear.

As part of the ‘Protect Your Crown’ initiative, the city is asking residents to complete a short survey. That survey will help city leaders better determine where funding and resources should be prioritized and allocated.

“It’s huge,” Tate said. “ It’s just 19 easy questions. But they are personal questions. We understand that confidentiality is important. We’re not asking for your name. All we want to know is what zip code you’re in, so we know what’s going on in this part of the city or in that part of the city.”
