A man accused of posing as a DTE worker to enter a Rochester Hills home and kill the homeowner has been arrested. Another man suspected of being involved is still at large.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was arrested Saturday in Shreveport, Louisiana. The arrest comes less than 24 hours after police released doorbell video of the two suspects dressed as DTE workers knocking on the front door.
Police said the suspects posed as DTE workers to gain access to the home where 72-year-old Hussein Murray was murdered, and his wife was tied up.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard believes the crime was targeted and potentially connected to Murray’s jewelry and pawn shop business.
“Whether it was specifically related to them owning a jewelry and pawn business that would be kind of our intuition on this topic, but we don’t know that for a fact yet until we capture the folks and if and when they talk about their motive,” he said.
Murray owned Gold & Glitter Jewelry in Hamtramck. The shop was closed Saturday with a sign on the door saying there was a family emergency.
His family released a statement to Local 4 saying they’re heartbroken.
“My grandfather was a man with a heart of gold, who treated all those around him with kindness and compassion,” Murray’s grandson, also named Hussein Murray, said. ‘We are heartbroken by the news of his death, but our family will bond through this with the resolve he has instilled in us by being the man he was.”
Police are still searching for the second suspect seen in the doorbell video.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Rochester Hills police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tipsters will remain anonymous.
