DETROIT – A deadly mass shooting on Detroit’s east side has left some community members rattled.
The shooting happened on July 7, during what police described as an unauthorized block party near Reno Street and Rossini Drive.
Now, three months later, that tragic incident continues to haunt the family of one of the young victims who was killed.
“We are broken,” said Gamerise Young during a press conference at Crime Stoppers of Michigan on Wednesday. “You broke us! Help us get justice.”
The pain Young feels right now is palpable.
“I’m still waiting for my son to come home,” Young said. “But he’s never coming back!”
The grieving mother’s spirit is still shaken, as the family continues searching for answers to the mass shooting that left Young’s son dead.
Phillip Arnold, Jr., 21, was shot and killed while trying to help others. A 20-year-old woman was also killed that night.

Nineteen other people were injured. Still, after three months, no suspects have been identified.
“How could you think so little of life,” Young cried. “You take a life I gave? It wasn’t yours to take! It wasn’t yours to take!”
Family members said they haven’t received many updates from police. They said they’ve been asking questions and interviewing people independently without any luck.
They do know that the police said the chaos happened during a large block party. Neighbors claimed around 350 people were in attendance.
Video from a nearby home showed a crowd swarming around a couple of women during a fight.
Moments later, you could see people running for their lives as gunshots were fired into the crowd. At least 100 bullet casings were found at the scene.
“You have ruined us,” Young cried. “I know people know who did this. It was too many people hurt! It was too many people shot!”
Police released surveillance images of a group seen walking toward the crowd shortly before the shooting. Yet, they still need leads to identify the persons of interest in that group.
“It doesn’t matter if you didn’t mean to shoot him,” Young said. “You did! You did! Along with 20 other people. How do you do that?”
Crime Stoppers of Michigan now offers a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
The organization and Arnold’s family are urging the community to report tips to Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Tips may be made anonymously.
