Kayaker discovers decomposed human remains along Rouge River embankment in Wayne

Detectives confirmed upper torso of remains were human and began recovery efforts

WAYNE, Mich. – A kayaker has discovered what appeared to be decomposed human remains tangled along an embankment in Wayne.

The remains were found on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at 5:15 p.m. after detectives from the Wayne Police Department responded to the area of the Lower Rouge River near Pershing Street.

Detectives confirmed the upper torso of the remains were human and began recovery efforts.

The Michigan State Police Marine Service Team pulled the remains from the river on the morning of Oct. 17, 2024; they located and recovered the lower half of the remains nearby in another portion of the river.

Officials say the human remains were transported to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation, but the identity of the remains has not been determined.
