OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Timothy Allen Daugherty, a contract substitute teacher at Spring Mills Elementary in Oakland County’s Huron Valley School District, is facing charges of criminal sexual conduct involving students, with allegations dating back to April.
Daugherty was charged on Aug. 29 with a series of incidents alleged to have occurred in Highland Township, where he was contracted as a substitute teacher.
Allegations against Daugherty involve inappropriate sexual contact with minor students.
Parents are planning a lawsuit against the Huron Valley School District, which they believe brushed off the allegations when they were first brought up in April.
One parent said the district ignored them at “every turn” and made them feel like the claims weren’t important.
“They blamed us at every turn that they could,” the parent said. “We do not feel like we got any support.”
The Huron Valley School District said they are cooperating with the investigation and that Daughtery was suspended in April as soon as the allegations emerged.
Ven Johnson, who is an attorney representing 11 families who said their child was sexually abused by Daughterty, said otherwise.
“They knew about the fact that this gentleman was involved in a criminal case where he was being charged with a similar thing years ago back in the 2016 timeframe,” Johnson said. “So the question is: What was he even doing there?”
Johnson said the case was dismissed because the child victim decided not to testify in court.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the victims this time were all young girls about 10 years old.
“You’ve got a situation where you’ve got young kids and a position of authority of a teacher above them who utilizes that authority and that position to do terrible things,” Bouchard said. “It’s the definition of a predator.”
Daughtery’s preliminary hearing takes place Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m. He is currently out on bond and wearing a GPS tether.
