Bicyclist wanted by police for assaulting, groping women in Ferndale

FERNDALE, Mich. – The residents of Ferndale are on edge following a string of assaults targeting women in the area.

The incidents have occurred at at least three locations. Near the intersection of Farmdale and Troy streets, near Vester and Woodward avenues, and near Breckenridge Street and Woodward Avenue.

”Well, it makes me a little uncomfortable as a woman who lives in this neighborhood and regularly walks to work,“ said Lauren Trendler.

Police said at least three women have reported assaults by the man, who would ride by his targets, grope them and leave.

”To hear about this, you know I’m young, and an easy target for this guy, so, it’s really scary," said Ava Milana. “I’m now re-thinking how I carry myself in public and how I am aware of my surroundings.”

Darnell Blackburn, Local 4’s Crime and Safety Expert, knows there’s a reason why police are urging the public to stay alert and aware.

Ferndale police said at least one of the victims was looking down at her phone when the assault happened.

”A soft target is an easy target," Darnell said. “So, if you’re looking at your phone, you’ve got your phone in your hand, or you’re listening to earbuds, it distracts you.”

As police continue searching for leads on the suspect, Blackburn has advice for people who may be walking outside at any time in any area.

”Take a look at who‘s around you -- Make eye contact with people and even speak. ’How are you doing today?’" Blackburn suggested.

Anyone with information or who has experienced a similar incident is asked to contact the Ferndale Police Department at 248-541-3650.
