Detroit residents urged to apply for HOPE tax relief as deadline approaches

Program is based on income and other circumstances

DETROIT – The deadline to apply to Detroit’s HOPE program is November 1. The program reduces or eliminates current-year property tax obligations for eligible Detroiters.

It’s based on income and other circumstances.

“I live below the poverty level, and it really helps me to work in the community,” HOPE Program recipient Peggy Noble said.

Willie Donwell is the director of the Property Assessment Board of Review, which approves HOPE applications each year.

“We want to try to help everyone that deserves the assistance. So we want you to apply and let the board make the determination,” Donwell said.

So far, 15,000 people have applied this year, but it’s estimated that thousands more qualify.

“The struggle is getting the word out and letting folks know that there is help with the city of Detroit and there is also help with the Wayne County treasurer,” Donwell said.

Noble encourages her neighbors to apply.

“I have been pushing it like you said because the deadline to apply is next week,” Noble said.

Perfecting Church will hold a HOPE Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The church is located at 7616 East Nevada Street in Detroit.

Residents who can’t attend the workshop can still get assistance by calling the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520.
