Election integrity at forefront as city of Warren skips preprocessing

Preprocessing was not mandated for clerks

Early voting takes place at the Warren City Hall, Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, in Warren, Mich. In Michigan, a state that both sides say they must have to win the White House in 2024, a cloud of apathy has settled over the electorate. With the state's voters poised to cast ballots in their respective primaries on Tuesday and the prospect looming that they will be given the same choices in November that they considered four years ago, genuine enthusiasm is hard to find.(AP Photo/Carlos Osorio) (Carlos Osorio, Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. Warren City Clerk Sonja Djurovic Buffa has administered elections for 24 years, and she says her staff will demonstrate accuracy and precision in the 2024 Presidential Election between Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump.

Buffa said accuracy was the No. 1 priority for her, and then speed was second.

“It is for these reasons that I have chosen not to preprocess,” said Buffa. “First, it actually would take more time to preprocess absentee votes for eight days, given the extra people needed, the time it takes, the storage necessitated, and the compiling afterward, than one full day of counting.”

Buffa said preprocessing was not mandated for clerks, and the legislature could have easily mandated preprocessing, but they chose to make it optional.

She said that up to eight days of preprocessing could lead to leaked or compromised results, but she would not risk compromising the integrity of the election.

“I also want the results quickly, and we are committed to accomplishing that task in addition to keeping the election accurate, safe, and secure. WE CAN DO THIS! I hope that the scrutiny this office is getting will not discourage the general public from voting. As always, thank you for voting.”
