DETROIT – A licensed pharmacist from Dearborn Heights has been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay nearly $7 million in restitution.

Zeinab Makki was the pharmacist in charge from 2001 through 2021 at New Millennium Drugs and Western Wayne Pharmacy. According to authorities, she admitted that she led a scheme to defraud Medicare, Medicaid and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan by submitting claims for pharmaceuticals that New Millenium Drugs and Western Wayne Pharmacy did not actually purchase.

Makki was arrested in March 2022 and charged with healthcare fraud after being accused of submitting millions of dollars of claims to Medicare and Medicaid for drugs the pharmacy didn’t dispense.

Makki was sentenced to spend two years in federal prison and pay $6.9 million in restitution.

She was arrested the same day as her husband, who was charged in a different fraud scheme. Wahid Mohamed Makki pleaded guilty in October 2023 to fraudulently obtaining more than $1 million in COVID relief loans to buy a seaside condominium.
