DETROIT – A public input meeting was held on Tuesday for the I-75 Cap Project.
The I-75 cap is a local project supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
A highway cap is a type of bridge built on top of a highway. It’s commonly used to create new park areas and connect the community.
The feedback was largely positive at the meeting.
“I believe anyone that’s walked over Woodward previously recognizes that’s not a very pedestrian friendly area, so having more green space, having less road noise, I think that would greatly improve how comfortable I am walking with my young child over Woodward and with the rest of my family,” Brush Park resident Jonathon Hitz said.
Other residents talked about what they would like to see in the new space.
“I want these spaces to honor Black Bottom and what was taken away from us as well as honor what’s planned for the future,” Detroit resident Charlo Jarmons said.
Although nothing is concrete, project organizers presented three proposed caps: East Cap, West Cap, and Central Cap.
The West Cap is between 3rd and Cass avenues and would be designed for Cass Tech Students, university students, and commuters.
The Central Cap is between Clifford and John R. and would be designed for residents of the area, visitors, and commuters.
The East Cap is between John R. and Brush and would be designed for Brush Park residents, visitors (especially those coming to Ford Field, Comerica Park, and Eastern Market), pedestrians, and cyclists.
The estimated five-year timeline would have the project finished in 2029.
