DEARBORN, Mich. – A couple who were both in the same NICU together when they were born 28 years ago returned to the Dearborn hospital as newlyweds.
It all began with a pair of women whose babies were taken to the newborn intensive care unit back in 1996.
“If you would‘ve seen me as a parent 28 years ago, there was fear, doubt, helplessness, hopelessness,” Sherry Krambeck said. “Now there’s joy.”
Krambeck’s daughter, Rachel, was born prematurely at Corewell Health in Dearborn. She was just under 3 pounds.
Audra Sackey was another NICU mom at the time. She had given birth 10 days earlier to Hayden.
“My son -- after the third day, they came in and said, ‘I think you need to make arrangements,’“ Sackey said. ”I said, ‘Arrangements for what?’"
Krambeck said Sackey was her “welcoming committee,” showing her how things worked at the hospital. The two of them became friends and stayed in touch.
Their babies, Hayden and Rachel, beat the odds. Then, 28 years later, they got married.
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024, they returned to the NICU that welcomed them, but this time as husband and wife.
