Today in Detroit history: Harry Houdini’s mysterious Halloween death
There’s an urban legend that Harry Houdini died in Detroit on Halloween after performing at the Majestic Theater.
This isn’t true. It’s a myth. Don’t be ridiculous. The truth is that Harry Houdini died in Detroit on Halloween after performing his last show at the Garrick Theatre. Totally different.
The Garrick Theatre was demolished a few years later, but it used to stand where the vacant First Independence Bank Building stands now, near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Griswold Street. The theater was in the center of what is still Detroit’s financial and retail district.
There’s another myth that Houdini died after getting sucker punched in the gut. This one is a bit harder to prove or disprove.
Things that go bump in the night (and day!): Local 4 viewers share their ghost stories
Hello and happy Halloween! It’s the last official day of spooky season (although it’s always spooky season in my heart) and a handful of viewers were kind enough to share their ghost stories.
Human bones found 15 years ago near Hoover Dam belonged to Michigan man
Human bones found 15 years ago by workers pouring cement near the Hoover Dam have finally been identified as a Michigan man.
This story dates back to Nov. 11, 2009. Workers had been contracted to pour cement for the Highway 93 widening project in Arizona.
They took a break at mile marker 3 near the Hoover Dam. While they were standing on the west side of the highway, one of the workers saw what appeared to be a bone, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
Two men walked around the area and found more bones. They thought they looked like human bones, so they told a supervisor.
Weather: Metro Detroit trick-or-treat Halloween weather forecast: When to expect rain
Thursday’s warmth will not break a record, but it will be an unusually warm Halloween.
Thursday will be a few degrees cooler with afternoon highs in the lower 70s, but rain and wind could be an inconvenience.
The showers, including an isolated thunderstorm, will arrive from the west. The best window for showers will be from noon until 5 p.m., but a couple of showers could pop up as early as 11 a.m. and last as late as 6 p.m. That means that children and families could encounter a few raindrops at the start of trick or treating, but showers will diminish.
