DETROIT – The father of a 3-year-old boy has been charged after the boy got ahold of a gun and shot himself on Wednesday in Detroit.
The shooting happened on West Grand Street in the area of Livernois and Davison at around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
According to Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald, the child was shot inside his home. He said the stories told by the mother and father at the time were conflicting and inconsistent.
The mother told police she went to the laundromat and was unloading the car when she heard a pop. She then went to check on the child.
However, no one in the area heard any shots.
Inside the home was a 15-year-old who was left in charge, a 2-month-old, a 2-year-old and the 3-year-old who was shot.
Both parents were detained, and CPS was called.
Police said the child appeared to be shot once in the stomach. The child was sent to a local hospital in critical condition. Officials told Local 4 he is expected to make a full recovery.
Police later determined the gun was the father’s, and it was left unsecured and loaded.
Richard Williams, 29, has been charged with Unsafe Storage Causing Injury.
Williams will appear in court on Monday, Nov. 4, for a bond hearing.
