SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Local 4 has learned heartbreaking new information about a deadly apartment fire in Southfield.
On Tuesday (Nov. 5), investigators were on the scene trying to determine what caused the fire, and the Red Cross was working to help the displaced residents get housing.
We spoke to people who escaped the fire, but a lot was left behind, as many lives are impacted right now, including a 73-year-old woman.
The fire occurred on Monday (Nov. 4) at the Le Chateau apartments on Southfield Road, near 10 Mile Road.
Fire crews from six neighboring communities assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
The blaze, believed to have started in a second-story apartment, quickly spread, causing the roof to collapse and damaging or destroying 32 apartment homes.
Southfield Fire calling for a search and rescue was vital, and that is how Constance Robinson, 90, was able to get out.
We spoke to her daughter on the phone about the incident.
“She grabbed her keys and went to the door, and that is when she saw a fireman who said get out of here now,” said Chavanda Robinson. “She did not turn, and she headed out.”
Upstairs lived the 73-year-old neighbor who did not make it out.
The Red Cross is working to connect with people who have lost everything.
