Domestic violence survivor reacts to 2 men being killed in Metro Detroit separate shootings

Leaving can be challenging for victims

Two separate domestic violence situations left two men dead, with one in Warren and the other in Redford.

Those situations are just more examples of why domestic violence is such a big deal right here in our country.

Thankfully, the folks at Haven are working on helping out as many people as they can, and the people who survive these situations know all too well what it’s like to deal with them.

Carole Budd is someone who knows the dangers of abuse at the hands of someone you love. For her, it was her then-husband on Christmas Eve.

“I came home to go to the closet and get presents for the kids,” said Budd. “We had four kids. I turn around, and he’s standing there with a gun to my head. He tried to throw me over the staircase.”

So she’s not exactly happy hearing that a Warren woman shot and killed her boyfriend after he allegedly forced his way into her home Monday (Nov. 4).

Similar story the same day when another man in Redford was shot and killed in a domestic situation as well.

“I’m heartbroken by it,” Budd said.

The director of counseling at Haven Domestic Violence Shelter, Marcia Scott, says abuse comes in many forms.

“There’s emotional abuse, there’s financial abuse that also takes place. These are signs that, again, to the public, no one would know unless a survivor tells them,” said Scott.

But leaving can be challenging.

“There could be finances,” Scott said. “It could be not safe to leave. But what we do know is the risk of a survivor dying is when she attempts to leave.”

Yet Haven is working to help those being abused get out of that situation as best they can.

“With Haven, there are different things that a survivor can access,” Scott said. “Maybe it’s help with changing locks. So we can help with those things, or giving them a 911 phone. We have 24-hour crisis line.”

“I’m on a mission to help others if I can,” Budd said.
