SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – At Thompson International Academy, a Southfield mother beamed with pride, standing next to her daughter, Latricia Nabor, who traveled hundreds of miles to fulfill her civic duty on Election Day.
“I’m so proud of her, I love my baby,” said Chaquita Nabor.
Latricia Nabor, 20, a college student in Atlanta, Georgia, made the journey home to ensure her voice was heard at the ballot box.
“I had to vote,” said Latricia. “I had to make sure I did my part in my community. One vote is very, very powerful. If you don’t vote, you’re voting for the opposite side.”
Latricia, a first-time voter, was joined by her siblings, making this Election Day a family event.
Her mother was particularly moved to see her children taking the process seriously.
“They actually took their time and read the ballot, and they studied the people. I’m excited about that,” Chaquita said.
The Nabor family’s commitment didn’t stop there. They planned to pick up their paraplegic uncle and Latricia’s grandfather, who hadn’t voted “in a long time,” to make sure they could participate, too.
Latricia’s father, Douglas Nabor, said he felt “absolutely proud” of his daughter.
“Ecstatic,” Douglas. “She takes this opportunity seriously and is very conscious of her civic responsibilities. We have the opportunity; we didn’t always have this opportunity. We have it now, so we need to take advantage of it.”
