Inmate allegedly threatened to bomb Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s home in letter, officials say

An incarcerated man has been arraigned in connection to sending Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer a threatening letter, officials said.

Jihaad Ahmad, 36, who is incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections, was arraigned on one count of false report or threat of terrorism, according to a release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s Office.

The man allegedly sent a threatening letter to Whitmer’s office in May.

In the letter, Ahmad threatened her life and also threatened to bomb her home once he was released from prison.

“Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats to not only them but our democracy as a whole,” Nessel said. “My department is committed to prosecuting this offense to the fullest extent of the law.”

Ahmad faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 for this charge.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 14.
