JACKSON, Mich. – Two people were hospitalized and a shooter was killed following a police standoff in Jackson County.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (Nov. 6) at 5:09 p.m. when the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office contacted Jackson County Central Dispatch to advise area law enforcement of the shooting suspect being tracked into Jackson County at 4:30 p.m.
Officials said the tracking device indicated the vehicle (which was a maroon van) the shooter was driving was in Jackson County.
Officials from the Jackson Police Department located the vehicle in the 1000 block of Cooper Street on the east side of Jackson.
When law enforcement officials approached the vehicle, the man fled from the scene at a high rate of speed, causing a pursuit.
Within the first minute of the pursuit, officials said the man began firing a weapon at pursuing law enforcement. Multiple shots were fired at the officers and deputies as the man attempted to get away.
Officials said several vehicles and homes were shot during the pursuit; fortunately, no citizens were harmed.
At approximately 5:40 p.m. in the intersection of Van Dorn and Elizabeth Street on the city’s eastside, a sergeant from the Jackson Police Department was reportedly shot by the suspect. The bullet went through the sergeant’s arm and into his body.
A deputy from the sheriff’s office transported the sergeant to Henry Ford Hospital.
Converging officers and deputies were able to stop the suspect. Multiple shots were fired during the attempt to arrest him.
During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and incapacitated; no other officers or deputies were shot.
Life-saving efforts were performed on the scene of the suspect. The suspect was taken to the Henry Ford Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Officials say numerous pipe bombs were located in the suspect’s vehicle.
It is believed that he may have thrown them out of the vehicle during the chase, as there were explosions along with gunshots.
Michigan State Police are conducting a criminal investigation.
