DETROIT – A 16-year-old boy has shot a 14-year-old in the head and his mother in the arm during a kids’ argument in Detroit.
The shooting occurred on Thursday (Nov. 7) in the 800 block of Delaware Street around 6 p.m.
“We have a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy exchanging words back and forth,” said Detroit police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald. “Somehow, another 13-year-old who may be related comes down to break them up. The 8-year-old runs back to his house and grabs his 14-year-old family member along with his mother.”
Fitzgerald said when the 14-year-old and the mother arrived, the 14-year-old boy and the 13-year-old started talking back and forth before the 16-year-old boy joined his mother and the 14-year-old boy.
Officials say the mom tried to stop the 16-year-old, but he pulled out a gun and started shooting.
“He shoots the 14-year-old, striking him in the head,” Fitzgerald said. “He is in extremely critical condition. He also shoots his mom in the arm.”
Officials said the 16-year-old took off on foot after the shooting.
“When he took off running, he runs past one of our undercover operations who were completely different and separate from this incident where he was detained and is in custody,” Fitzgerald said.
Another young man was also arrested as officials say he tried picking up the weapon and walking away. The weapon was dropped and recovered by the police.
“So, right now, over a silliness fight between a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old, we have a 14-year-old that’s in critical condition,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s in surgery now, and our suspect’s mom was shot in the arm.”
